Photo contest rules

Please read this entire document. it contains vital information to ensure that your photo entry is valid.

Photographs must be entered into one of 6 categories, described below. If the subject-matter of your photo does not match the category in which it is entered, it may be disqualified by our judge. Choose your category from the drop-down box when uploading your photo.

Categories:

  1. Natural world: nature in action, the Canadian landscape, animals, plants, water resources, geological or climatological features
  2. People and history: Canadian identity, cultural mosaic, indigenous peoples and heritage, multiculturalism
  3. Art, culture and community: events, activities or creative works connecting Canadians to their history or their cultural heritage and to other cultures worldwide
  4. Science and innovation: scientific endeavors, research, technology
  5. Human rights and democracy: democratic and electoral reform, treaty rights
  6. The future of Canada: sustainability, health and well-being, food security

Sponsor

Re-imaging Canada Photo Contest sponsor is Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies, University Centre, University of British Columbia, 6331 Crescent Road, Vancouver, BC Canada V6T 1Z2, Canada (“Sponsor” or “PWIAS”).

PWIAS reserves the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. Decisions of PWIAS will be final. No purchase is necessary. Residents of Canada excluding Quebec are eligible to enter.

All photographers will be given photo credit. We will not sell your images. You must have full rights to publish the photograph. By submitting your photos you grant PWIAS the right to publish the images for PWIAS purposes in any format including on the PWIAS website and in PWIAS publications or presentations, such as newsletters, brochures, media kits, public service announcements, reports, awards, thank-you cards, displays, mailings and invitations, etc.

Eligibility

To enter and be eligible to win, a person must be a legal resident of Canada (excluding Quebec) at the time of entry who has reached the age of majority in the jurisdiction in which he/she resides and who is not an employee of the Sponsor or a member of any such employee's immediate family (regardless of where they live) or persons with whom they are domiciled (whether related to the employee or not). In these Rules, "immediate family" includes mother, father, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, partner or spouse.

The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law.

Internet access with sufficient bandwidth to upload an electronic photograph and a valid email account are required to enter to the Contest.

Term

The Re-imaging Canada Photo Contest begins November 23, 2016 and ends February 17, 2017. The winner will be announced on March 1, 2016. Information on how to enter and prizes form part of these official rules (“Official Rules”). By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to the Official Rules and warrants that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules. This is a skill based contest and chance plays no part in the determination of winners.

Prizes

There are 3 prizes awarded:

  • First place: $1,000
  • Second place: $500
  • Third place: $250

How To Enter

Visit http://pwias.ubc.ca/re-imaging-canada-photo-contest (the "Contest Website"). To register, click the 'Browse' button to select a photo from your computer and then click the 'Upload' button; complete the electronic entry form by filling out all required fields. Ensure that you have agreed to these Rules by clicking the check box below Contest rules and rights at the bottom of 'Legal Stuff.' Lastly, click on the "Submit" button to enter your photos.

All photos and descriptions uploaded and entered into the Contest must comply with the "Photo Requirements" section of these Rules.

All entries must be received by no later than midnight, February 17, 2017. Your submission, including your photo, photo location, photo description and your name will be displayed on the Contest Website for the duration of the Contest Period and thereafter in the discretion of the Sponsor, unless it is removed by the Sponsor for non-compliance with these Rules.

Photo Requirements

Entries are to be digital photographs submitted electronically to the contest website. Scans or photos should be provided as a JPG or JPEG file of the highest quality available to you, 300 dpi, at a minimum of 6.5” wide (1,950 pixels wide), RGB. If possible, save the image with an embedded colour profile. Cropping of photos is permitted, tonal or colour corrections are acceptable. Borders, frames, text or other graphic treatments are not permitted.

Entries and Identification

Photograph content must adhere to one of the 6 specified categories or it will be disqualified. Criteria for judging include exposure, composition, uniqueness, creativity, technical proficiency and relevance to chosen theme. Photographs entered must not have been previously published. Individuals can only win once per category and may not win in multiple categories. Entrants must own all rights to the photographs submitted. As such, entrants hold PWIAS harmless from any breach of copyright. Photographs that have won any other contests or have been published in a magazine or newspaper (except online) are not eligible.

If the photograph contains any material or elements that are not owned by the entrant and/or which are subject to the right of third parties, and/or if any persons appear in the photograph, the entrant is responsible for obtaining, prior to submission of the photograph, any and all releases and consents necessary to permit the exhibition and use of the photograph in the manner set forth in these Official Rules and Rights without additional compensation. In other words, you have the consent of anyone who is identifiable in your photo or the consent of their parent / guardian if they are minors.

PWIAS holds the right to disqualify entries with inappropriate content.

Publication

Winners' names and photographs will be published on http://pwias.ubc.ca/re-imaging-canada-photo-contest. PWIAS reserves the non-exclusive right to publish any entry on PWIAS web sites or print publications and/or use any entry in promotional and advertising materials and may make the images available to media outlets as components of media kits to promote PWIAS. Photos published by PWIAS will be credited to the photographer. PWIAS will not sell any images or provide them for any other commercial purpose or publications.

Deadline

All entries must be received prior to 12:00 am PST, February 17, 2017. Upload entries through the contest website.

Judging

The winners will be selected by a judge. Winners will be notified by email ONLY by March 1, 2017. Decision of the judge is final.

PWIAS is not responsible for any failure of the website during this contest. Nor is it responsible for any problems or technical malfunctions of computer online systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment, software or any email, online or internet entry lost due to technical problems or traffic congestion on the internet or at any website or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to an entrant’s or any other person’s computer or property related to or resulting from playing or downloading any material in the promotion.

COPYRIGHT NOTICE

With regard to any photograph submitted to this contest, the entrant, or the owner of copyright in the photograph, retains copyright. By uploading or submitting any photograph to this contest, the entrant grants (or warrant that the owner of such materials expressly grants) PWIAS a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for any PWIAS purpose, including, but not limited to advertising and promotional materials, its website, exhibition, and commercial products, including but not limited to PWIAS publications. PWIAS will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses. Winning entrants are required to indicate their acceptance of the above conditions.
