In response to current research and societal priorities, the Peter Wall Institute is issuing the following two funding calls:

Virtual Roundtables under our International Research Roundtables program

Virtual Roundtables will support interdisciplinary working groups comprised of international scholars and non-academic participants, drawn from multiple disciplines. Preference will be given to proposals that aim to advance knowledge in relation to pandemics and their broader societal implications. Projects must propose specific outcomes with short timelines for completion. We are particularly interested in outcomes such as rapid publications that include policy recommendations, to be published on the PWIAS website; as well as digital forms of communications, such as videos and online seminars, aimed at engaging public policy makers at different levels of government. Awards up to $10,000 available.  The application call opens May 1, 2020 and the deadline for applications will be June 1, 2020.   The Institute is aiming to provide a rapid review for these applications. Funding decisions on applications received by May 15 will be made by June 1.  Funding decisions on applications received by June 1 will be made by June 15.  Further calls may be announced based on funding availability.

COVID-19 Solutions under our Wall Solutions Initiative

We seek projects exploring immediate solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences to society.  Preference will be given to proposals with short timelines for completion of 3-6 months. Proposed outcomes should be aimed at implementation or adoption of the proposed solution through practice or policy.  Projects are expected to demonstrate active participation and engagement with appropriate end-users, policy makers or community partners. Digital forms of knowledge mobilization are eligible for support.  Awards up to $20,000 are available. The application call opens May 1, 2020 and the deadline for applications will be June 1, 2020.  Funding decisions will be made by June 30. Further calls may be announced based on funding availability.

The Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies has launched a call for applications to fund new working groups to produce rapid publications in relation to COVID-19. Up to $10,000 will be awarded to interdisciplinary teams to work on evidence-based recommendations that draw on knowledge from multiple disciplines, including Economics, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Data Science, Epidemiology, Public Policy, Ethics, Humanities, and Law.

We recognize the challenges of the current research environment and the difficulties that may be posed to applicants applying to our regular programs. In response to the rapidly changing circumstances, we have postponed the application deadlines for the 2020 International Research Roundtable and Wall Solutions Initiative programs to June 1, 2020. We are closely monitoring the situation and will post further updates as more information becomes available. For more information, please contact the Program Manager at internationalprograms@pwias.ubc.ca.

We are also preparing to release a new PWIAS funding call for COVID-19 Rapid Publication Working Groups. The call will be posted on our website in the following days.
