Letter from the outgoing Director

As Acting Director of the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies in 2015-2016, I had the privilege of being part of a particularly outstanding and exciting year, marked not only by the Institute's regular activities but also by the many events we hosted as part of UBC’s centennial celebrations. The latter included two extremely successful Opera Roundtables as well as several international workshops. Throughout the year it was a pleasure to welcome a succession of International Visiting Scholars that were hosted by the Institute and who enriched the academic atmosphere on campus. The highlight of my experience, however, was to get to know an extraordinary cohort of 12 Wall Scholars from across campus, who met on a regular basis over lunches, wine and cheeses and dinners to discuss their research interests as well as contemporary issues such as the Canadian federal election or the role of research universities in the twenty-first century. I also had the privilege of hosting two extraordinary Wall Exchange Lectures at the Vogue Theater in downtown Vancouver, by Eyal Weizman in the fall of 2015 and Naomi Oreskes in the spring of 2016.
