Carole P. Christensen, was appointed Professor and Director of The University of British Columbia School of Social Work and Family Studies in 1991. She was the second female, and the first woman of colour appointed Director in the School’s 75 year history. Her prior position was Professor, McGill University School of Social Work where, for 21 years, she initiated courses, taught, published widely, and conducted research and workshops focusing on cross cultural, anti-racism, and family therapy. Dr. Christensen chaired the Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work’sTask Force on Multicultural and Multiracial Issues in Social Work Education (1989-1991) that produced a research report resulting in changes to accreditation standards nationwide. Dr. Carole Christensen was awarded a Canadian Heritage grant (1991-1994) and founded the Multicultural Family Centre (MFC) to assist Immigrants and refugees to access health and social services. She created the Bridging Model to establish a partnership at REACH Community Health Centre, remaining Program Director and procurer of MFC funding until 2007. On June 13, 1997, Dr. Christensen received the Distinguished Service to Families Award from the BC Council for Families. She was the invited 2019 Keynote Speaker for Black History Month in Richmond, BC.
