Daniel Coombs

Prof. Coombs is cited for his creativity, productivity, and ever-growing impact in mathematics applied to problems in biology. He works in the field of computational immunology, addressing a wide range of problems in viral disease dynamics and HIV modelling, and in the dynamics of receptors on cell surfaces. In particular, he and his co-workers have recently developed innovative single particle tracking algorithms that have enabled improved and insightful interpretation of experimental data from cell biology.

Prof. Coombs obtained his PhD in 2001 from the University of Arizona, held a postdoctoral position at Los Alamos National Laboratories (2001-2003), and joined UBC in 2003.

Mathematical modelling is essential to develop a quantitative and predictive theory of the COVID-19 epidemic. Daniel Coombs’ team has been generating new understanding and making predictions based on rigorous mathematical modelling since March 1st. Their work to date has largely been in response to urgent questions from the provincial response committee, and has not been made public except in a highly summarized form.
Their insights and models will be extremely valuable to modellers working in other jurisdictions, and to raise public awareness of mathematical modelling and its role in the epidemic response. This working group will be pursuing public outreach efforts to make their insights and models available for further analysis by modellers and other interested parties.
