Dr. Zacher’s (1938 – 2014) research in the area of international relations and global public policy is well known internationally and has had an immense influence on those who work on the politics of international institutions and law. He has not only published monographs with major university presses and articles in leading journals, but he has held fellowships at Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics and Toronto. Dr. Zacher directed the Centre for International Relations from 1971 to 1991.

Dr. Zacher’s scholarly influence is also felt across disciplines, especially his co-authored books: Pollution, Politics and International Law: Tankers at Sea (U California Press, 1979); Managing International Markets: Developing Countries and the Commodity Trade Regime (Columbia UP, 1988); and Governing Global Networks: International Regimes for Transportation and Communications (Cambridge UP, 1996).

Mark Zacher – Distinguished Scholars in Residence – 2006
At the Institute in 2006, Dr. Zacher worked on the politics of international health collaboration, including a book, “United by Contagion.”  With Dr. Janice Stein, Director of the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto, he co-directed the Wall Summer Institute for Research, held 25-28 June, 2007. The theme of WSIR 2007 was “Civil Society Organizations and Global Health Governance."
