Dr. Ryan McNeil is a Research Scientist with the BC Centre on Substance Use and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Through his qualitative and ethnographic research, he seeks to identify social, structural, and environmental influences on risk, harm, and health care access among people who use drugs (PWUD).

Dr. McNeil co-leads the BCCSU’s Qualitative and Ethno-epidemiological Research Program focusing on contextual influences on drug-related outcomes. Through this research program, qualitative and ethnographic methods are employed in connection with three prospective cohort studies comprised of drug-using populations: the At-Risk Youth Study, the AIDS Care Cohort to Evaluate Exposure to Survival Services, and the Vancouver Injection Drug Users Study. Dr. McNeil is also the Principal Investigator of several community-based participatory research studies undertaken in partnership with drug user organizations, including studies examining how residential evictions and low-income housing environments shape drug-related risks and harms.
