Cosmos, Quantum and Consciousness: Is Science Doomed to Leave Some Questions Unanswered?

May 6, 2019

Physicists and philosophers debate whether research can ever solve certain mysteries of the universe—and the human mind.

Earlier this year a provocative essay in Aeon explored the idea that everything we do in science is conditioned by the way we look at the world, and the way we look at the world is limited. The essay was co-authored by Wall Scholar and philosopher Evan Thompson, Dartmouth physicist Marcelo Gleiser, and University of Rochester astrophysicist Adam Frank. The topics discussed in the essay was the focus of a two-day workshop titled “The Blind Spot: Experience, Science, and the Search for ‘Truth’,” held at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire, on April 22 and 23.
