Join us for a free lecture by Julia Cagé, author of Saving the Media: Capitalism, Crowdfunding, and Democracy.
In this talk, Dr. Cagé will call for changes to the legal frameworks governing journalism. She will advocate for the creation of not for profit organizations that could reinvest surplus funds into journalistic production, encourage citizen participation, and create tax incentives for private contributions. Canada has lagged in this area until recently, but new opportunities are on the horizon now that the federal government has made changes that allow more charitable donations to journalism. Dr. Cagé will discuss her ideas for a media vouchers system, a new public funding model free from government intervention.
Julia Cagé is an Assistant Professor in Economics at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, and co-director of the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Evaluation of Public Policies research group. Her areas of research are in political economy, organizational economics, and economic history. She is particularly interested in the media economy.
This event is co-hosted by: The Global Reporting Centre, the Global Journalism Innovation Lab, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
