South Africa does not simply face water scarcity, it is confronting a broader systemic crisis in the water sector. While this crisis is often considered to be one of water management, what is arguably even more critical is local governance. Drawing on the experiences of residents of Madibeng, a poor area neighboring a few mines and in close proximity to dams, this talk considers how one of the most hopeless of situations has the potential to be turned around—and how other areas may be able to follow.

Reception to follow. This is the inaugural talk in the series Hope in the Anthropocene: Sustainability Solutions and Inspirations co-sponsored by Green College and IRES.
