InSite, located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, was North America’s first supervised injection site. Its creation marked a new paradigm for addressing addiction that prioritized harm reduction over criminal justice, improving the health of vulnerable citizens while reducing costs. In this workshop, we ask what lessons can we learn from InSite’s success for advocacy and change-making? InSite would not have been possible without the wise choices of a diverse set of change makers: advocates, parents of addicts, nurses and doctors, lawyers and judges, municipal councilors and mayors. We will discuss InSite as a model of phronesis in decision-making, hearing directly from those most involved in the creation of this inventive approach to drug addiction.
