Mato Grosso, Brazil in the global food system: Promises and pitfalls for improving agricultural resilience using biochar

Abstract:Mato Grosso, Brazil has emerged over the past decade as one of the most important food production areas in the world, producing more than 10 per cent of the world’s soybeans. However, Mato Grosso also has vast areas of less productive sandy soils, much of which has already been deforested and converted to agricultural uses, despite the low water holding capacity that limits agricultural potential. In this presentation, research to date on strategies to improve agricultural resilience of sandy soils will be discussed, focusing on opportunities for utilizing biochar produced from waste biomass sources.
Speaker:Dr. Eduardo Guimarães Couto is a Professor of Soil Science at the Federal University of Mato Grosso. He currently leads several international interdisciplinary research projects related to sustainable land management practices within the Amazon, Cerrado (savannah) and Pantanal (wetland) regions of Brazil.
