This workshop will examine Leonie Sandercock and Giovanni Attili’s “Unsettling a settler society: film, phronesis, and collaborative planning in small-town Canada,” and their film “Finding Our Way,” as models of phronetic research—research that involves relationship-building, context-sensitive story-telling, careful listening and empathy. We are interested both in the conflict and reconciliation process that is documented in the film, as well as the ways in which the researchers engaged in reflexive practice in the process of their research, and the use of film-making as a kind of therapeutic intervention. John Forester, a distinguished scholar who teaches City and Regional Planning at Cornell University, and author of The Deliberative Practitioner, and many other publications, will lead off the discussion.

Convener: Max Cameron

Speakers: Ken Cameron, John Forester, Leonie Sandercock and Linc Kesler
