slippages

Oct 05, 2018

The Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and the UBC School of Music are proud to present the world premiere of slippages, an interdisciplinary performance about climate change.

This timely collaboration between Wall Scholar and Orchestra director Jonathan Girard and visual artist and past Peter Wall Institute artist in residence Deborah Carruthers, has the orchestra performing her graphic score slippages. This score is Carruthers interpretation of her research on glaciers done at UBC.

During the event, the UBC Symphony Orchestra will improvise a 10-minute performance accompanied and informed by Carruther’s visuals – 27 paintings on handmade paper.

The event will include a brief introductory talk in advance of the performance of slippages, in which both the creation of graphic scores and the practice of structured improvisation will be briefly explained.

The evening’s program, which also includes works by Mahler and Taiwanese composer Tsang-Houei Hsu, will also be live-streamed in HD 360 and made available for later viewing online.

Tickets are $8 and are available at tickets.ubc.ca, in person at the Chan Centre Ticket Office, or call 604-822-2697.
