The Neuroglial Partnership: An alternative therapeutic strategy to target Alzheimer’s disease

This seminar will focus on the importance of the “other cell type” in the brain, the neuroglia, and their unique role in normal and diseased brain. An overview will be presented of the role and functions of neuroglial cells, as well as gap junction proteins, named connexins and pannexins, expressed in the brain and their contribution to neurodegenerative processes. These roles of astroglial connexins have been studied using several approaches (electrophysiology, calcium imaging, cell and molecular biology, unique transgenic mouse models) and developing pharmacological and genetic tools targeting connexin channels. These studies aim to reveal the still unanswered questions about the active and chronic interaction between neurons and glia, with specific focus on the development of new therapeutic approaches in the context of neuroglia and neurodegeneration.
