I Hear You Say

As part of the University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS) conference held in mid-September 2013, the Peter Wall Institute was proud to unveil an art installation that translates sound waves into furniture.
Made from postconsumer recycled EPS (expanded polystyrene) with a painted polyurea coating, the installation is a large-scale visualization of the word “Ah” that functions as site-specific seating on the terrace of the Peter Wall Institute overlooking English Bay and the Coast Mountains beyond.
The installation was generously supported by the research funds of past Institute Director Dr. Janis Sarra and the Emily Carr University of Art and Design GRAND AD-Node Network.
“Contemporary linguists speculate that the way we communicate relies on auditory cues and gestures in addition to the conventional meaning of words”, said Professor Joseph Dahmen, 2012-2013 Peter Wall Institute Early Career Scholar. I Hear You Say is located on the terrace at the Peter Wall Institute and is open to the public on weekdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
The installation was designed by AFJD (Amber Frid-Jimenez and Joe Dahmen), with input from the 2012-2013 Early Career Scholars at the Institute. Design and production assistance by UBC student Ashley Eusebio.
