Interdisciplinary Premiere of Oscar Navarro’s Leyendas
March 3, 2020

2018 Wall Scholar Jonathan Girard (UBC Music) was recently part of presenting a ground-breaking new concerto that combines music, visual art, and theatre to produce one of the most immersive clarinet works ever written. The world premiere of Leyendas by composer Oscar Navarro featured world-renowned clarinetist Jose Franch Ballester (UBC Music) with Maestro Jonathan Girard (UBC Music) leading the UBC Symphony Orchestra.
This project was a major interdisciplinary collaboration between the UBC School of Music, the Department of Theatre and Film, and the Department of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory. Faculty, staff and students invested thousands of hours of work in developing the content and the innovative projection design used in the performance.
The premiere, held February 7th at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, is now available as a full 4k video with subtitles in 11 languages.
