In 2000 Nicolas Perry received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Nantes University, focusing on the material - process interaction high energy welding processes of titanium and stainless steels. From 2001 to 2007, at the Research Institute on Communications and Cybernetics of Nantes (IRCCyN), his research topics focused on performance improvement using Virtual Engineering approaches. Knowledge Management is used to define Knowledge-Based Environments as Engineers Decision Tools in the area of Costs and Value Management. This period gave projects and research collaborations in the field of model-driven engineering for products or processes' industrialization.
Since 2011 he has worked as a full professor at the Arts et Metiers Bordeaux at the Mechanical and Engineering Institute of Bordeaux. His research topics include environmental consideration in the design process and product evaluation. His main focus is on the composite domain due to a high connection with space and aircraft local industrial relationships. This area (from design to part manufacturing) allows topics in the mechanic field with economic and ecologic interests. Indeed, high performances parts have to integrate the end of live constrain, and composites have to demonstrate their end of life possibilities. The integration from the design to the process allows facing simulation and experimentation to evaluate the design and industrial impacts. This research emphasizes the knowledge exchanges and feedback from the end of life actors (re-manufacturers or recyclers) to the designers.
