Peter Goddard

Mathematical Physicist and Professor
Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University

Dr. Peter Goddard’s research centres on quantum field theory and string theory. The pioneering contributions he has made with his collaborators to these areas include the quantization of the relativistic string and the “no ghost theorem” of string theory, electric-magnetic duality in gauge theories, the construction of conformal field theories and the realization of gauge symmetry in string theory.

Before serving as the eighth Director (2004–2012) of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University, he was Master of St. John’s College and Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge, where he played a leading role in establishing the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the University of Cambridge Centre for  Mathematical Sciences.
