PWIAS Statement of Support for Global Climate Strike
September 23, 2019

The Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies is dedicated to exploring some of the most profound questions and challenges facing humanity. Climate Change is the biggest challenge our generation is facing. As such, we recognize the need for urgent and meaningful actions to address this issue, and join other university departments and institutions in declaring a global climate emergency.
On September 27, millions of people worldwide will be taking part in a Global Climate Strike to demand actions be taken to meet this emergency. UBC students, staff and faculty will join by holding an event from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the AMS Nest. After the UBC event, members of the campus community will travel by bus and bike convoys to Vancouver City Hall, where the Vancouver Climate Strike will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies supports this action and invites staff, Wall Scholars and Wall Associates to join the rally. To facilitate participation in the strike, the office will be closed and program activities will be cancelled. We also pledge to implement ways to mitigate our own impacts on climate, and to continue supporting climate related research such as Wall Scholars’ work on the environmental impact of academic conferences.
Please read about UBC and the Global Climate Strike in a letter to the community from Santa J. Ono, President and Vice Chancellor, and Chair of the Peter Wall Institute Board of Trustees.
