Sally Aitken led a group of researchers who found that a single old-growth tree can have up to 100,000 genetic differences in DNA sequence between the base and the tip of the crown. This is the first evidence of the genetic variation that can accumulate in some of the tallest trees.
As a Wall Scholar, Sally Aitken spent part of her residence investigating the genomic basis of genetic adaptation of tree populations to climate, to evaluate their capacity to adapt to new climates and to develop policy recommendations to assist the adaptation of forests to new environments.
