Update from President Ono on interim director appointment process

February 15, 2019

I am pleased to share an update about the process that will be undertaken to select an interim director for the Institute.  I will also take this opportunity to thank the three nominees who are standing for consideration, and colleagues who supported each nomination.

The Interim Director will be joining PWIAS at an exciting time. It is essential that the choice be well-informed by a broad group of stakeholders who believe in the Institute’s mission and vision.  The PWIAS Director is appointed by the President of the University and in order to make a well-informed decision, I will seek advice from the UBC community, from the PWIAS Distinguished Professors, and the Board of Trustees.

In the next few weeks, the PWIAS will organize three one-hour open sessions where each nominee will have an opportunity to meet with the community to share their vision for the Institute. At these sessions, the nominees can share their priorities for the interim role and respond to questions.   Each session will be recorded and available for those who are unable to attend in person.  Feedback and advice will be invited following each session, and will be critical in informing my  decision. Details about the date and location of these sessions will be posted shortly.

Nominees will also have an opportunity to meet with the PWIAS Distinguished Professors, and then separately with the Board of Trustees.  We hope to have this process complete, and the Interim Director named by the end of March.

I would like to thank everyone in the PWIAS Community for their ongoing interest in the success of the Institute.  We are excited about the Institute’s future, and look forward to hearing from you about the all-important decision about its interim leadership.
