2015 Wall Scholar Shaylih Muehlmann, associate professor of Anthropology, and 2017 Wall Scholar Shannon Walsh, associate professor of Film Production, are among a diverse group of 175 writers, scholars, artists, and scientists who won prestigious Guggenheim fellowships this year.
The fellowships are appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, successful candidates were chosen through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants in the Foundation’s ninety-sixth competition.
Shaylih Muehlmann’s work examines the intersections between environmental conflict, language and identity, with a specific focus on how social processes coalesce in the construction of inequality and the formation of social subjects. While at the Peter Wall Institute, Shaylih Muehlmann worked on a book manuscript on the emergence of women’s led activism against drug war policies in Mexico.
Shannon Walsh is a filmmaker who has written and directed four feature documentary films, which have been theatrically released in Canada, the UK, and South Africa, and played in over 70 film festivals worldwide. During her time as a Wall Scholar, she focused on completing research and filming for her feature documentary Illusions of Control, which tells five stories of people creating new relationships within human damaged landscapes such as clear-cuts, decommissioned mines, deserts and nuclear contamination zones.
